PNEUMONIA VACCINE
This is recommended for everyone over 65 years as well as the at-risk groups (see flu at risk groups above).
FLU VACCINES
These are available every year commencing in October and continuing until March.
If you would like a flu vaccine (and are eligible), please contact the surgery.
There are 2 types of flu vaccine for adults – One for over 65’s and one for 18-64. This is because different types of vaccines work best in different age groups. It is important to have the correct vaccine for your age group.
The nasal spray flu vaccine remains the vaccine of choice for the majority of children (under18).
Target Groups:
- All 65 and over (including those who’ll be 65 by 31 March 2023)
- All children aged 2 and 3 (some older children will be offered flu vaccine at school)
- Pregnant Women
- are in long-stay residential care
- receive a carer’s allowance, or are the main carer for an older or disabled person who may be at risk if you get sick
- live with someone who is more likely to get infections (such as someone who has HIV, has had a transplant or is having certain treatments for cancer, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis)
- frontline health or social care workers
Patients with any of the following conditions;
- Chronic Kidney Disease
- Chronic Heart Disease (including heart attack and angina)
- Chronic Respiratory Disease (including COPD, emphysema, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis and asthmatics on preventative inhalers)
- Chronic Liver Disease
- Diabetes
- Immunosuppression (due to drugs or disease)
- Chronic Neurological Disease (including MS, Huntingdon’s disease and Motor Neurone disease)
- Stroke or TIA (mini stroke)
- Morbid Obesity (BMI of 40 or more)
- No Spleen/dysfunction of spleen
Please note that people in the 50-64 years old age group will not be vaccinated until November and December, providing there is sufficient vaccine, and no appointments will be offered for this age group until then. This is to ensure that those who are most at risk are vaccinated first. If you are 50-64 and you are in one of the other groups which is eligible for the flu vaccination, for example you have a health condition which puts you at risk from the flu, you will be invited earlier.
SMOKING CESSATION
Our Health Care Assistants and Nurses can help together with SmokeFreeLife, our local quit smoking provider.
WELL PERSON CHECKS
If you are over 16 years this is your opportunity to have your own “MOT”. These are run by our practice nurses with particular emphasis on helping you to avoid heart disease and maintain a healthy lifestyle. We would particularly like to see any adult up to 75 years old who has not been seen in the last 3 years, and over 75s who have not been seen in the last 12 months. Home visits can be arranged if necessary.
MINOR INJURIES & X-RAYS
A recent survey of our patients revealed that some of you are not aware that the GPs and Practice Nurses are able to deal with a vast majority of minor injuries such as sprains, cuts and head injuries; we are also able to request X-Rays when necessary to rule out bony injuries.
All this can be done here in Radcliffe-on-Trent, so make sure you use us as your first port of call and you may be able to avoid a trip to hospital.
